The Legends of Kitesurfing

Posted by Emma Pat On September - 22 - 2014

What does it take to become a legend? It’s not about being a trendsetter or having a lot of fans or followers. You have to have what it takes to surpass expectations, to be able to do things in epic proportions, and your name has to echo throughout history as one of the awesome people who did it not just for fame and fortune but because you loved every minute of it. Who are we talking about?

Jesse Richman

Robby Naish is one of the first athletes to have gained international fame for wind surfing. His father, Rick Naish, was into competitive surfing so he was introduced into water sports at a young age. From 1977-1979 he was competing as an amateur and has won successive World Championship titles. From then on he has won numerous awards like the Overall World Champion and the PWA World Champion. During the emergence of kite surfing, he became a noted competitor. And in 1998 he won the kiteboarding slalom world title, in 1999 he went on to win both the slalom and jumping world titles!

Flash Austin

During the early years of kitesurfing, Flash Austin was already a force to be reckoned with. Even after years of kiteboarding he’s still as enthusiastic about it as ever, injuries never stopped him from getting back on his board again. Needless to say he has won countless awards already.

Kevin Langeree

Youri Zoon a.k.a. Sloeri was born on December 13, 1989 in Dirksland, Netherlands. His riding style: powered technical and freestyle and his local kitespot would be Brouwersdam. He has won the World Championship twice (2011 & 2012) and currently has several sponsors (Joya, Mystic, Brunotti, Javra Software, Koraal.org, Best Kiteboarding).

Aaron Hadlow was born on Oct. 4, 1988 and is a professional kiteboarder who has won the (PKRA) Pro Kiteboard Riders’ Association World Championship five times. It wasn’t easy though, he had to climb his way to the top. His dad was into watersports while he was into football. When he was 10 years old he flew his dad’s kite on the beach and the year after that he found himself on a board dreaming on becoming the next David Beckham of kiteboarding.

Susi Mai

Susi Mai was raised by parents who were both windsurfers. She has basically always lived the beach life. Kiteboarding was only a past time for her until she surprised everyone by placing 2nd in the PKRA competition. It was from there that she found support thru a kite company to do the world tour and she placed 5th over all. When Susi Mai won the King of the Air in Maui, it was a big moment for her and kiteboarding history.

Lou Wainman

“Lou Wainman is unquestionably the most influential kiteboarder of all time.” -SBC kiteboard                                                    No truer words have been spoken. Lou is the one who started the wake style movement. He’s also the one who’s said to have created the most of the tricks you see today. It was no surprise when a company (Wainman Hawaii) was named after him and that he was made a partner. Unfortunately though that partnership didn’t last, he posted on his facebook page that he quit Wainman Hawaii. Although he isn’t into the competition or performing for the benefit of others, there’s no doubt in my mind that Lou’s contributions to Kitesurfing and his name would forever be known in Kitesurfing history. I can’t wait to see what he does next!

Youri Zoon Demo Days

Posted by kite2012 On September - 7 - 2012

Youri Zoon has currently been hosting a kite camp in Neretva river, Adriatic sea, Croatia, which is said to be one of the best kiteboarding spots in the world, but I guess that´s what most locals say about their own spot. Anyway, this is a pretty nice video with some good action, for instance some crazy dude that climbes up on a bridge using the power from his kite. There are also some scenes of the recurring “sausage parties” that we usually see in context with kitesurfing competitions and kite camps like this one. Girls, please start kitesurfing so that the atmosphere stop being so damn gayish! ;)

PKRA 2012 Germany

Posted by kite2012 On July - 16 - 2012

Guess who won the final in the PKRA competition in Germany this year? Yes, you guessed right, Youri Zoon! However, it was a close call between Youri and his main threats Alex Pastor and Kevin Langeree. I wonder how long he will be able to keep the #1 ranking…

Youri Zoon in boots!

Posted by kite2012 On June - 18 - 2012

For a long time Youri Zoon refused to ride with boots, but apperantly he has finally realized that he is forced to ride with boots if he wants to beat Alex Pastor. His obvious sponsor is of course Brunotti, but it looks like they forgot a small detail when they were mounting the boots on the board… =)

Brunotti Video

Posted by kite2012 On June - 12 - 2012

Brunotti sure knows how to produce a marketing video… The whole video is filled with the Brunotti logo, but still I kind of like this video. The video is from an event in Holland this year. Brunotti gathered their team including Youri Zoon and they apperantly decided to trash the party, but in a good way! Note how Brunotti makes fun of Naish and Cabrinha by trashing some poor old kites from the stone age :)

Youri Zoon

The youth has always been fond of trying out new things. Among the new things youth want to explore are new sports. The adrenalin rush that sports bring excites the youth and brings out the adventurous individuals among them. Extreme sports are become more and more popular among the sport-minded individuals as they bring a certain sense of excitement and power that regular sports may not possess. Among the extreme sports, water sports are the most interesting.

Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, is a surface water sport that is growing in popularity among the youth. It is an extreme water sport that is a combination of surfing, wakeboarding, paragliding, windsurfing, and gymnastics. Kitesurfers employ different techniques when kitesurfing. Some of the techniques kitsurfers enjoy doing are downwinders, freestyle, course racing, free ride, speed, jumping, wakestyle, and wave-riding.

One well-known kitesurfer today is Youri Zoon. Born on the 14th of December 1989, Youri Zoon has been an experienced kitesurfer for seven (7) years. He was a windsurfer who discovered kiteboarding and fell absolutely in love with it right after he had his first kitesurfing lesson. Zoon’s favorite kitesurfing spot is Brouwersdam. He has visited many kiteboarding sites. He kitsurfed in the following places already: South Africa, Thailand, Mexico, Egypt, Canada, Vietnam, USA, Venezuela, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Japan, Cabarete, Portugal, Brazil, France, and Netherlands.

Among his kiteboarding gears, he is happiest with his Slingshots kites and Brunotti boards. He gets his Brunotti boards form board shaper Jinne Sietsma. His favorite board style is 133*40.

Whe asked about his riding style, Zoon said that he likes to keep his kite low. His riding style is one that prioritizes both power and technique. Youri Zoon’s favorite trick as a kitesurfer is known as Mobe 7. For him, the Mobe 7 is a very technical trick and when it is performed correctly, it exudes a certain air of power. His latest tricks with his kitesurfing gears include making doubles of almost all the tricks he has already learned and done.

He advices all those who want to try kitesurfing to make sure that they take lessons first before doing it.

Among his sponsors are: Slingshot, Brunotti boards, Koraal.org, Mystic Kiteboarding, and Daarom, com Online Marketing.

Youri Zoon has been a professional kitesurfer for 7 years already. Within that span of time he has joined many competitions all over the globe. He has competed with other well-established kitesurfers. There were a lot of instances wherein he won competitions. However, there were also competitions where he weren’t as lucky. In December 2011, he finished 3rd place at the PKRA World Tour. He joined 6 competitions in a row but was unable to win every single one.

Youri Zoon can be seen in a new video from Slingshot:
